What a Relief!

Our guest blogger this week is my pal Joan Webb. Here’s what Joan has to say:

TODAY’S LAUGH: Joan C. Webb here—Mary’s  writer-friend from Arizona. She and I try to meet on the phone every two weeks to “jam” (JAM=Joan And Mary) about life and writing, but with our joan-c-webb-photo-web-size-close-up-11-07schedules we stay flexible.

Which reminds me of the other day when a summer dust and rain storm blew through our neighborhood.

“Look outside,” my husband Richard said. “Now that’s an Arizona monsoon!”

We peered out the front window at our two prized trees. “So glad we trimmed them again last week. Otherwise they might be goners with this blast.” (When trees get top heavy a fierce wind can uproot them.)

“Yeah. Good thing you’ve taken care of them. That one in front is in great . . .” Before I could say the word “shape,” we watched the tree crash across the driveway, missing the house by an inch. That shouldn’t have happened. We did everything we could to guarantee it wouldn’t.

But hey, things don’t always turn out like we want them to.

TODAY’S ENCOURAGEMENT: We liked that tree—and we nurtured and groomed it for years. Yet when we lost it unexpectedly, we decided to “flex” with our landscaping plans. Now we rather enjoy the new uncluttered look in our yard.

For me, it’s another vivid reminder that imperfection and joy can co-exist. When we believe the misconception that people, circumstances, projects, and “trees” have the ability to be perfect, then life, others, and ourselves become a continual disappointment. Major bummer!

The truth is people, circumstances and actions don’t have the ability to be constantly flawless here on earth. Only God is perfect.

And life doesn’t have to be perfect to be wonderful. Neither do our plans, work, relationships, bodies, churches, quiet moments or faith. Now isn’t that a relief?

Free to Relax…At LAST!

WELCOME to this week’s guest blogger Karen Rabbitt:

TODAY’S LAUGH: I’m 57 years old. Last week, for the first time, I threw away thekaren-rabbitt end sliver of a bar of soap.

For 50 years, every time I got to the end of a soap bar, I’d carefully affix that bit to the new bar. This time, I thought: “What the heck. I can afford to throw it away.” Awfully bold, don’t you think?

Some of you may be thinking, “Yikes, what’s wrong with her? Why is it such a big deal to throw away that bit?” Others want to tell me: “What do you mean, wasting soap! Save several slivers and put them together in a little mesh bag. ”

TODAY’S ENCOURAGEMENT: Where we come from affects how we respond. Raised in poverty, I waste little. Maybe you understand. But if you were born in the flush 1980’s to parents with good jobs, saving soap slivers may seem obsessive.

That obsessive tendency is rooted in fear. Fear that, if I didn’t do everything right, I’d get hurt. Again. I’d been hurt, a lot, in childhood, by my father, when he molested me out in the field behind our farmhouse.

I’d been hurt when I told my mother and she didn’t seem to believe me. Childhood playground snubs hurt deeply and adult depression just solidified my sense that something was wrong with me.

But I’ve learned and grown and, by grace, I’ve gotten free. Free enough to relax about details.

I don’t have to be perfect. Neither do you.  Adequate is good enough. Forgiveness is possible. Healing is available.

I share my story of grace, healing and forgiveness in Trading Fathers: Forgiving Dad, Embracing God. Maybe you can use some of what I’ve learned to get free, too.

Making P.L.A.N.S!

WELCOME to today’s guest blogger, Sharon Knudson:

sharon-knudsonTODAY’S LAUGH: Garrison Keillor talks about shy Norwegian bachelors on his Prairie Home Companion radio show. Well, I’m married to one!

Bob was 50 when we met, and I was grieving the loss of my 30-year marriage, but at someone’s advice I baked some Cherry Macaroon cookies and—long story short, we were married a year later.

That story was published in Guideposts Magazine (Feb. 2005), and an agent asked me to write a book called Starting from Scratch When You’re Single Again.

Now I’m on a speaking circuit and bake cookies to bring along. Sometimes I tease Bob and say, “Look what happened because you ate those Cherry Macaroons!”

TODAY’S ENCOURAGEMENT: Life takes unexpected twists and turns, and sometimes derails our PLANS for happiness. My PLAN for a life-long marriage failed, and I had to start over from scratch. Notice the following acronym:

P is for PURPOSE: We all dream of a happy life. We set goals and proceed with purpose, but,

L is for LOSS: Tragedy blind-sides us and can bring horrific loss! Grief and sorrow threaten to stay around forever.

A is for ANALYZE: Our mind goes into overload as we analyze our situation. “What’s going on—this can’t be true! How will I survive?”

N is for NEEDS: We find it necessary to re-assess our needs. “Should I move to a different place? Do I need a new job? Are community resources available? Is my grieving healthy?”

S is for SERENITY: “God – grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can, and wisdom to know the difference.” Eventually we’re ready to make new PLANS!

When my 30-year marriage failed, my PLANS for a happy life suddenly changed. But a shy, Norwegian bachelor and those Cherry Macaroon cookies gave me a whole new purpose.

If you are experiencing loss today, be encouraged that with God’s help you can not only survive, but thrive.
